Westerville’s Middle School Students Compete at Statewide Chess Tournament

Middle School Chess Club students attended and made a strong showing at the Greater Cleveland Scholastic Chess Tournament at Cleveland State University on October 27.

Jacob Ginn and Ben Merkey, both of Blendon, and Aundre Miller-Williamson of Walnut Spring competed in the 7th -8th grade division, the largest division in the tournament with 19 students. After full day of competition, Ginn earned the 1st place trophy and a brand new Kindle Fire. Merkey placed 8th and Miller-Williamson placed 13th. Westerville’s students also were honored at the event for traveling the furthest distance. Most of the competitors were from the Cleveland area.
