Hanby Elementary launched its first lacrosse unit this week thanks to a grant from USA Lacrosse, which provided a classroom set of equipment — worth up to $800 — for physical education teacher Alisa Franklin.

Franklin applied for and was granted a 2021 Physical Education grant by USA Lacrosse, which provides national leadership, structure and resources to fuel the sport’s growth and enrich the experience of participants.

“It’s such a popular and fast-growing sport that I wanted the kids to be introduced to it,” Franklin said.

She started the lacrosse unit by showing students videos of skills needed for the sport. Then she created stations where students could practice techniques such as scooping balls with lacrosse sticks and shooting them into a net.
