On September 21, Hanby Magnet School students took part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace, by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace on the front lawn of their building at 56 S. State St. Pinwheels for Peace is an art installation project started in 2005 by two teachers in Florida as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year approximately 500,000 pinwheels were displayed throughout the world on September 21, the International Day of Peace. Last year an estimated four million pinwheels were spinning in some 3,500 locations. Hanby students wrote their thoughts about "war and peace / tolerance/ living in harmony with others" on one side of each pinwheel, and used the other side to visually express their feelings.
