Emerson students view their school mates’ projects.

Last week, fourth and fifth grade students at Emerson Elementary Magnet School celebrated their second annual Science Day.  Fourth graders chose a science topic of interest and created a demonstration and display.  Fifth graders prepared science experiments for Science Fair and displayed their findings.  Parents and fellow students came to view the displays and listen to student presentations.  There was a wide variety of projects on display, like fourth grader Soren Hubble’s report about the Wright brothers and the technology behind their airplane construction. Another fourth grader, Kiley Weller, impressed her classmates with her knowledge about the structure of DNA.  Fifth grader Maggie Dillman explored the effects of acid rain on plants.  Another fifth grader, Alex Fahmi, experimented with the lifting power of helium balloons. Several fifth graders also displayed their work in the Science Fair competition over the weekend.

Teachers Jenny Findell and Mara Clark were thrilled to be able to have Science Day again this year.  “It’s amazing how well they do with this project considering it is very open ended,” noted Clark. “I love that students follow their interests and are really invested in this!”
