Second grade teacher Cathy Monteiro watched in horror as her hometown – Smithtown, New York – was buffeted first by Hurricane Sandy and then by a Nor'easter. Luckily she has an army of seven and eight year olds at Emerson World Languages & Cultures Magnet School who are ready to lend a hand. They are collecting peanut butter, hot chocolate, marshmallows, blankets, fleece blanket kits and money for shipping costs. Leftover funds will be donated to the American Red Cross. Monteiro is also collecting paper boxes to help ship these supplies. The items will be shipped to her childhood friend, who leads a Cub Scout Troop. The scouts will deliver the donations to those in need in Smithtown and Breezy Point, Queens – the area that was devastated by fires. Monteiro plans to continue collecting as long as there is a need.
