The Westerville community is invited to Westerville South Theatre Troupe 513’s production of “Bright Star,” a tale of love and redemption set against the backdrop of the American South in the 1920s and 1940s.
Showtimes are 7 p.m. Oct. 28 and Oct. 30; and 2 p.m. Oct. 31 at the school, 303 S. Otterbein Ave. Admission for all students is half off ($5) on opening night on Oct. 28. Tickets can be purchased here.
Inspired by a true story and written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, the musical tells the story of Alice Murphy, a literary editor who meets a young soldier home from World War II who awakens her longing for the child she once lost. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey to understand her past — and what she finds has the power to transform both of their lives.
“Even though it’s an adult story, at the base of it, it’s about love and it’s about searching for something in your gut you think is there and not giving up on that,” Matt Wolfe, who heads the theatre program at Westerville South High School. “That’s what I’m trying to teach the kids — whatever the world throws at us, you keep going.”
The troupe’s Bright Star production will be evaluated by the CAPA Marquee High School Musical Theatre Awards, which recognizes musical theatre students in 11 categories from participating high schools throughout Central Ohio. The CAPA Marquee Awards will announce the winners at a student showcase event on May 10, 2022 at the Ohio Theatre.
