Westerville South High School has been awarded a grant from the Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children in Grove City to purchase medical equipment that assists students with physical disabilities when using the toilet.

The grant, which totals $4,095, will cover the costs of a Rifton support station in one of the recently renovated restrooms for students with multiple disabilities.

Kristin Tobin, a physical therapist for the district, approached the Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children with a grant request to support students with significant orthopedic restrictions and are dependent on an adult or supportive equipment for all toileting needs. The Rifton support station would allow students independence in their own personal hygiene and self-care routines within the school environment.

Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children Executive Director Chad Dennewitz and President Michael Johnson presented Tobin, Superintendent Dr. John Kellogg, Westerville South administrators and members of the district’s Special Education department with the grant dollars on Thursday.

The support station is slated to be installed by late September.

The Aladdin Shriners Hospital Association for Children provides financial support for the care and treatment of children in Central Ohio suffering from burn injuries, orthopedic problems, spinal cord injuries and cleft lip and palate deficiencies.
