The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, December 6.  December students are Madeline Schultz, Westerville Central High School; Mikayla Martin, Westerville North High School; Hajakaday Doumbouya, Westerville South High School; and Kathleen Keating, St. Francis DeSales High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding pupils who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.

Westerville Central senior Madeline Schultz holds a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.8.  History and English are her favorite subjects of study.  She serves as a peer helper in the Multiple Disabilities classroom, is active in the Be the Change Club, and was a teen leader at Challenge Day.  Last year, she was a Warhawk Junior Mentor.  She also created a video for Spread the Word to End the Word.  Schultz has rowed for the Westerville Crew since her freshman year.  She was a Warhawk Academic Boosters Student of the Month and has received three Underclassmen Academic Awards.  She plans to major in Special Education/Intervention Specialist (Moderate-Intensive) at Ohio University in Athens.

Biology, Psychology and Sociology are Mikayla Martin’s favorite subjects.  This senior at Westerville North earned a 4.3 GPA.  She is captain of her soccer and basketball teams, and made First Team, Second Team and Third Team OCC.  She is also a W.A.L.T. member, is in the ASL Club and is National Honor Society secretary.  She volunteers at M.A.D. and has donated to W.A.R.M.  Martin holds a part time job at Chick-Fil-A.  She plans to major in Biology when she attends college next year, on a Pre-Dental track.

Twelfth grade DeSales student Kathleen Keating, whose GPA is 4.400, likes to study Chemistry and Biology.  She serves on the Leadership Team for Corral for The Kids Club, and has worked with Buckeye-thon to raise money for pediatric cancer research.  She is a National Honor Society Council Member and is active in the Italian Club.  She is also a varsity rower for the Westerville Rowing Club.  When she attends college next year, Keating plans to major in Biochemistry.
