Legendary Westerville South High School basketball coach Ed Calo, along with two others, will be enshrined into the Ohio Capital Conference’s (OCC) Hall of Fame at the Fall Executive Committee Meeting on Monday, September 17, at the Medallion Club in Westerville.
As the longest-tenured active head boys’ basketball coach in the OCC, Calo begins his 32nd season this year as head of the boys’ program at South. Calo is the winningest coach in the school’s history, having amassed 474 victories. During his tenure at Westerville South, his teams have captured 12 OCC titles and five District Championships. The Wildcats won the 2016 Division 1 State Championship (57-55 over Lima Senior) following a State Final loss to Huber Heights Wayne (65-57) in 2015. Calo began his coaching career in 1980 when he served as an assistant coach at both Grove City and Franklin Heights high schools. In 1986 he made his way to Westerville South, where he served as an assistant for one year before being elevated to the head coaching position the following season. The Wildcats are recognized across the state as a tough, defensive-minded squad that improves consistently as the season progresses.
