The Westerville South Class of 2022 started their freshman year with enthusiasm, by signing a pledge to complete all the work that is required to receive a diploma.

When freshmen walked through the doors of Westerville South yesterday, they arrived fully acclimated, surrounded by friends and acquaintances, and ready to learn.  This was made possible because of a generous $3,500 grant from the Westerville Sunrise Rotary Foundation that was used to host a half-day orientation program on Friday afternoon, August 10.

Hundreds of ninth grade students took advantage of the opportunity.  When they arrived, they were greeted by loud music and dozens of cheering staff members who separated them into groups (Red, Blue, Yellow and Green).  During the afternoon, they participated in team building exercises, and were entertained by comedian, radio host and motivational speaker Chris Bowers, billed as a “hilarious force of positivity whose comedy challenges conventional wisdom.”  They also learned cheers and chants; signed a Commitment to Graduate; took pictures; engaged in small group discussions with mentors; talked about the Code of Conduct; and took part in a scavenger hunt.  The afternoon concluded with a raucous pep rally in the gymnasium, which was followed by a meeting for parents.

New principal Mike Hinze expressed his gratitude to Sunrise Rotary for funding this outstanding orientation experience; thanked his dedicated staff and student volunteers for making the day so memorable; and warmly welcomed the newest Wildcats to Westerville South High School.
