The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, January 5.  January students are Allison South, Westerville Central High School; Afnan Salem, Westerville North High School; and Alyssa Fogel, Westerville South High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.

Math, Science and Government are Allison South’s favorite subjects of study at Westerville Central.  This senior holds a 4.5 grade point average (GPA).  She has played soccer all four years of high school, tutors, is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club, and co-founded the Debate Club.  She volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House and the Godman Guild.  South has earned a number of academic and athletic honors, attended Buckeye Girls State and was a Commended Student in the National Merit Scholarship Program.  She plans to pursue a degree in Political Science or Environmental Studies.

Afnan Salem, a senior at Westerville North, holds a 3.1 GPA.  She enjoys studying History and Math.  At school, she is involved in the International Club, Junior Mentoring, Global Scholars, Youth and Government and Skills USA.  She has also participated in food drives and volunteers at the World Relief Tutoring Club.  Salem will receive the prestigious Martin Luther King Jr. Fouse Award on January 16.  She was also named Outstanding Student in English, Biology and History classes.  After graduation, she hopes to attend Otterbein, Ohio Dominican or Capital University.

Westerville South senior Alyssa Fogel holds a cumulative GPA of 4.3.  Environmental Science, Physics and Calculus are her favorite classes.  At South, she participated in cross-country and track and field and served as the men’s volleyball statistician.  She was also an office helper and lab assistant.  Fogel earned a Character Education Award and has been recognized academically and athletically.  Outside of school, she volunteers at numerous race events.  She plans to major in Environmental Science at Otterbein University.
