Author Margaret Peterson Haddix Visits Alcott Elementary School

Author Margaret Peterson Haddix spent Friday, February 28, visiting Alcott Elementary School and sharing her books, as well as her writing process, with third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students. The students, who had spent the past few months reading her books and creating projects based on them, were excited to find out the process and inspiration behind the stories.

Students and teachers also had the opportunity to have books autographed by Mrs. Haddix. Twenty-four students each won a new, hardcover book autographed by Mrs. Haddix, and another 16 students won the opportunity to have lunch with her, funded by the Alcott PTA.

Mrs. Haddix grew up on a farm near Washington Court House, Ohio, and graduated from Miami University (of Ohio) with degrees in English/Journalism, English/Creative Writing, and History. Before publishing her first book, she worked as a newspaper copy editor in Fort Wayne, Indiana; a newspaper reporter in Indianapolis; and a community college instructor and freelance writer in Danville, Illinois. She has since written more than 40 books for kids and teens, including Running Out of Time; Don’t You Dare Read This, Mrs. Dunphrey; Leaving Fishers; Just Ella; Turnabout; Takeoffs and Landings; The Girl with 500 Middle Names; Because of Anya; Escape from Memory; Say What?; The House on the Gulf; Double Identity; Dexter the Tough; Uprising; Claim to Fame; The Always War; The Greystone Secrets series; Game Changer; the Shadow Children series; the Missing series; the Children of Exile series; the Under Their Skin duology; and The Palace Chronicles.

Mrs. Haddix also wrote Into the Gauntlet, the tenth book in the 39 Clues series. Her books have been honored with New York Times bestseller status, the International Reading Association’s Children’s Book Award; American Library Association Best Book and Quick Pick for Reluctant Young Adult Readers notations; and numerous state reader’s choice awards. They have also been translated into more than twenty different languages.
