Rotary Club of Westerville Students of the Month for January 2020

The Rotary Club of Westerville recognized its January 2020 Students of the Month during a luncheon Jan. 9 at the Villa Milano Banquet and Conference Center. During the school year, from October through May, the Club honors four students from local high schools each month. Working with the school principals and counselors, one student each month is chosen from Westerville Central, Westerville North, Westerville South and St. Francis DeSales high schools. The students, their parents, and the school administrators are introduced and honored at the Rotary Club’s first weekly luncheon each month.

January 2020 honoree profiles

Westerville Central: Sophia Trotman – Sophia carries a 4.09 GPA at Westerville Central, where her favorite subjects are History, English and Journalism. The senior is editor-in-chief of the school newspaper and yearbook, a member of the Superintendent’s Advisory Board and Renaissance Club, and three-year member of volleyball and track and field teams. She is one of Central’s delegates for Buckeye Girls State, a class officer and was a member of the Homecoming Court. She’s also an AP Scholar with Honors, a four-year scholar athlete and been named the honor roll every grading period in high school. Sophia plans to attend Alabama, South Carolina, Ohio State or George Washington universities, and study public policy or international studies.

Westerville North: Ariana Sanabria – Ariana has a grade-point average exceeding 4.0 and her favorite subjects are medica-related classes. She is a member of the Warriors’ swim team and four-year cross-country and track athlete. She volunteers with the Special Olympics and at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and as a coach for children with special needs. She has been recognized with North’s Scholar Athlete Award, Warrior Service Award and Leadership Award, lettered in sports and is a member of the National Honor Society. Already taking College Credit Plus courses at Ohio State University, Ariana plans to attend OSU and major in medicine. She was unable to attend the Jan. 9 luncheon due to conflicts with her college coursework.

Westerville South: Karina Deere – Karina carries a 4.5 GPA and is president of her class, president of the National Honor Society at South, captain of the cross-country team and member of the track team. She’s active in choir and theater, both as a Thespian and lighting designer, and a member of the state OHSAA Choir. She’s been recognized as a Cat with Class, scholar athlete, and South student of the month. Karina plans to study music business/management at Marymount Manhattan College, The New School University or Dale University.

St. Francis DeSales: Frances (Frankie) Bonte – Frankie carries a 4.128 GPA at DeSales and her favorite subjects are calculus, chemistry and art (ceramics). The senior is a BalletMet Academy student and performer, an officer and publicist for the DeSales Drama Club, treasurer of the Student Council, member of the National Honor Society and Spanish National Honor Society and choir. She also is a licensed amateur radio operator, rides a motorcycle and skydives! Frankie hopes to attend the University of Notre Dame or Case Western University, and major in engineering and dance.
