The Westerville City Schools Educational Options for Success (EOS) program recognized its eighth “Graduate of the Year” (for school year 2018-2019) on Monday, August 19.  Tyler Brown, a 2019 graduate of Westerville South High School, completed his graduation requirements through the EOS program, which is located at the Academic Enrichment Center (AEC). The Graduate of the Year is selected by the teachers and staff at the AEC each school year.  Attributes considered for this award are perseverance, scholarship, leadership, service, character, responsibility, respect, attitude, loyalty, and integrity.

During Brown’s two years at EOS, he successfully managed EOS, the welding program at the Career Center, and a part-time job.  His attendance and attention to detail in assignment submissions was remarkably consistent, finishing his last nine credits at EOS.  In addition, Brown’s work ethic was admired by EOS staff as evidenced by him consistently following through on his daily commitments in a way seldom seen in people his age (i.e., school, work, family, and home).  His daily attitude and approach to life is one of productivity, generosity, and optimism.  He rarely complained and typically exhibited an “I can handle it” attitude when it came to tackling challenges.

Brown has many options when it comes to attaining his career aspirations.  Currently, he has enrolled in the military and will be leaving very soon to attend basic training.  He has also received several job offers in the field of welding.  Adam Rex, EOS Program Coordinator, stated during the recognition program, “Whatever Tyler decides to do in the future, he will undoubtedly be successful if he tackles it the same way he has tackled the last four years of his life!”

For 19 years, EOS has continued to provide a quality educational alternative for students and their parents.  The award-winning program serves a wide variety of students, and has leveled the playing field to enable the district to gain a competitive advantage over its charter school counterparts.  EOS has not only helped hundreds of at-risk pupils to complete their high school education, but it has recouped state funding which is lost when students drop out or leave the district to pursue other educational avenues.  During the 2018-2019 school year, 98 students graduated from EOS, which contributed nearly eight percent to the district’s annual graduate rate.
