The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, May 3. May students are Kylie Collins, Westerville Central High School; Alexis (Lexi) Morton, Westerville North High School; Troy Taylor, Westerville South High School; and Cecilia D’Amico, St. Francis DeSales High School.
The purpose of the program is twofold: to recognize outstanding pupils who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.” Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.
Central junior Kylie Collins has earned a 4.54 weighted grade point average (GPA). English and Government are her favorite subjects of study. School activities include serving on the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee, the Renaissance Club, Global Scholars, Young Life, the National Honor Society, Junior Mentoring and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In the community, she volunteers at the Crawford Crew Junior Board; Red, White & Boom!; the Westerville Area Resource Ministry Christmas food drive, and the Ronald McDonald House. She is also captain of the softball team. She has received awards from Leadership Today, the Better Business Bureau, and the FLA. In college, Collins hopes to study communications with a focus on advocacy and non-profit work.
Chemistry, Anatomy and French are Lexi Morton’s favorite subjects. The Westerville North senior holds a 4.65 GPA. She is active in theater, Student Council, the Warrior Way Leadership Team, National Honor Society, and Junior Mentors. She was a class officer during her sophomore and junior years. Morton dances at the Generations Performing Arts Center and is president of the Generations Leadership Council. She earned the AP Award of Distinction, an Academic Letter, and President’s and Merit awards. She will graduate with an Honors Diploma. Morton plans to continue her education at The Ohio State University and major in chemistry, in pursuit of becoming a pediatric doctor.
Troy Taylor, a senior at Westerville South High School, likes studying Social Studies and Math. He has earned a 3.93 GPA. Taylor played basketball during his freshman year; is a four-year member of the Golf Team, where he was named Most Valuable Player; plays saxophone in the Wind Ensemble; and is involved in the Ohio Energy Project. He was named to the First Team Honor Roll for all four years; received a Cats with Class award, was named Student of the Month; is an All-State OCC Scholar Athlete; and earned Ohio High School Academic All-Ohio honors. He plans to major in Business at Michigan State University, where he will also play collegiate golf.
DeSales senior Cecilia D’Amico holds a 4.35 GPA, and enjoys studying Anatomy, Physics and English. She played volleyball for several years and finished ninth at Beach Volleyball nationals. She is also active in Student Council, as a Student Ambassador, on the Liturgical/Peer Ministry, Math Club, Run the Race Club, Italian Club, Italian National Honor Society and the National Honor Society. She formed an Autism Awareness Club and works with Autism Speaks and the Autism Society of Central Ohio. D’Amico earned a Presidential Excellence Award and Franciscan Sisters Merit Scholarships from Loyola, Miami and Kentucky. She plans to study Medical Sciences at the University of Cincinnati.
