Blendon students hear remarks from Be WISE camp director Joann Benseler and Ruthie Currie, a sophomore at Westerville South High School.

On February 23, Blendon Middle School students attended a presentation about the Be WISE camp, held at Denison University, which focuses on mathematics, science and technology.  There is a Day Camp in July for girls currently in fourth and fifth grade and a Residential Camp in June for girls who are in grades six and seven.

Ruthie Currie, a Blendon alumni and current sophomore at Westerville South High School, shared her experiences as a camper, a CIT (counselor in training), and a counselor.  Her Honors English 2 class, taught by Jen Baker, works on a yearlong global issues project.  Currie chose the issue of gender inequalities through the promotion of Be WISE Camp and its mission to bring STEM to young women.  Joann Benseler, director of the camp, also addressed the group, discussing classes offered, camp activities, and scholarships available.

This summer is the camp’s 28th anniversary.  More than 3,000 girls have participated throughout the years.  Registration deadline is April 1.  For more information, please visit http://www.bewisecamp.org.
