Bob Anglin encouraged students to consider careers in skilled labor.

On February 8, Bob Anglin, owner of Big Walnut Heating and Cooling, spoke to Educational Options for Success (EOS) students about careers in skilled labor.  He highlighted a number of skilled trades including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, pipefitting, welding, elevator installation/repair, sheet metal and crane operation during his insightful presentation.  Anglin shared, “Apprenticeship programs, coupled with on the job training, can provide a great career path full of opportunities, and can take you anywhere in America or around the world.”

Anglin told the students how skilled trade jobs would continue to be needed and valued.  He said, “Don’t be afraid to learn how things work.  Overcome the fear of the unknown.  Many people are scared of working with electricity and natural gas, but with proper training and experience, it can be done safely.  No one was born knowing how these things work.  If you are willing to learn and work hard, you can achieve the lifestyle you desire.  One of the biggest challenges in life is finding the career that fits you the best.”

Students had this to say about the talk:  “One take-away I learned from today’s presentation is that nothing happens fast and to take your time and be willing to learn and success will come.”  Another pupil shared, “There are many opportunities and career paths that do not require a college degree that can give you the opportunity to pursue a job you enjoy doing every day.”  Another observed, “Everybody has a path that we might not figure out right away, but if are eager and work hard enough, we can achieve what we work for.  Also, I like how he said to not just focus on the job, but on how my life will revolve around the job.  Choosing a career needs to fit with the things I want out of life.”

This presentation was planned to compliment a workshop offered at the Westerville Public Library on February 11 called Well-Paying Jobs, No Degree Required.  It was offered free to the public, and attracted several EOS pupils.
