On December 9, participants gathered in Richwood, Ohio from across the Midwest to compete in the United States Region of the World Cube Association. All 120 slots were filled at the Wildcat Holiday 2017 event, hosted at North Union Elementary School. Taking two of those seats were Walnut Springs 7th grader Aidan Maguire and his sister, Sadie Maguire, a 5th grade student at Hanby Magnet Elementary.
Events include the 3x3x3 Cube, 2x2x2 Cube, 4x4x4 Cube, 5x5x5 Cube, 3x3x3 One-Handed Cube, and Pyraminx. Participants compete against the clock and against times from others in the same expertise category.
Aidan competed in four of the six events. He solved the 2x2x2 cube in 8.05 seconds, the 3x3x3 cube in 24.48 seconds, 3x3x3 cube one handed in 1:04.22 seconds, and the Pyraminx in 13.27 seconds. Sadie competed in the Pyraminx event with a time of 20.21 seconds.
The World Cube Association is the governing body for competitions where participants take turns twisting the different shapes made most famous by Professor Rubik from Hungary, inventor of the Rubik’s Cube. Learn more at https://www.worldcubeassociation.org/about.
