Real-world journalists; business communication specialists; college professors; and high school publication advisers and students gathered for the annual Ohio Scholastic Media Association (OSMA) Workshop at Otterbein University on October 9.  Westerville North High School was represented by more than 20 Journalism I, II and III students, most of whom are staff members on the school’s newspaper, The Odyssey.

Some of North’s students participated in all-day sessions to learn more about digital photography; InDesign, a desktop publishing program; and sports writing.  Others elected to attend three shorter workshops on topics including the changing face of journalism; the 10 habits of a highly effective editor; an introduction to internships; real-world law and ethics; and much more.

More than 200 pupils attended the regional workshop, which is coordinated by OSMA, a statewide scholastic journalism organization headquartered at Kent State University.

Maryann Hines, North’s Journalism I, II and III teacher, accompanied the students.  She is also adviser to The Odyssey.
