Principles of Biomedical Science students at Westerville Central High School recently attended a panel discussion by the Delaware County Health Department.  Travis Irvan, disease prevention manager, along with Heather Lane, epidemiologist and Arielle Hieronimus, health educator, discussed a variety of public health topics and concerns.  Pupils participated in a role-playing activity in which some of them became “infected” with a disease to demonstrate how herd immunity in populations occur.  Students also gained insight about the importance of vaccines, safe handling of backyard chickens, and the Zika virus.  The panelists used real-world situations including local concerns such as the recent Cryptosporidium outbreak that shut down many local pools last summer.  Pupils gained valuable perspective about recreation water illness prevention and learned about the Health Department’s latest campaign to keep all local pools safe from this microscopic parasite in the future.
