The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, November 3.  November students are:  Nadia Swaney, Westerville Central High School; Mia Hoffman, Westerville North High School; Nathan Ware, Westerville South High School; and Luke Hippler, St. Francis DeSales.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.

Nadia Swaney, a senior at Westerville Central, holds a 3.75 grade point average (GPA).  Math and Science are her favorite subjects of study.  She is a Renaissance Leader, Student Section Leader, National Honor Society member and Junior Mentor.  She volunteers at the Delaware Humane Society, Riverside Hospital and the Westerville Area Resource Ministry (W.A.R.M.).  This two-time scholar athlete hopes to attend The Ohio State University to major in International Business.

Science and Math are also Mia Hoffman’s favorite subjects.  This Westerville North High School senior holds a 4.57 GPA.  Her athletic endeavors have included cross country, track, swimming and horseback jumping.  She is involved in a multitude of clubs and organizations at her school and has logged more than 400 hours of community service.  Hoffman has completed a number of college courses, AP courses and Honors courses, earning Academic Excellence awards in many subjects.  She won first place in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology SWE National Essay Contest, is a PSAT All Star, a Lashutka Award winner and an OSU Math Medalist.  Hoffman plans to major in Biomechanical Engineering.

Westerville South High School junior Nathan Ware holds a 4.3 GPA.  He participates in cross country, track, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Symphonic Band.  Math has become one of his favorite subjects of study, thanks to David Schultz, described by Ware as “the best math teacher that I’ve ever had.”  Ware is very active in his church and volunteers at My Very Own Blanket.  He is contemplating studying theology and philosophy in college.

Twelfth grade St. Francis DeSales student Luke Hippler enjoys Science and English.  He holds a 3.9 GPA and is involved in student government, basketball, volleyball, National Honor Society, Math Club and Run the Race Club.  He is a Student Ambassador who has volunteered for W.A.R.M and Easter Seals.  Hippler is All League and Region in volleyball and All League and District in basketball.  He plans to study Medicine at the University of Chicago, Notre Dame, Dayton, Miami or Case Western.
