Dust off your sneakers and mark your calendar for Sunday, October 2, because that’s when a special Walk/Run called “4 Paws for Joey” will take place on the track at Westerville South High School, located at 303 South Otterbein Avenue. The event is being held to raise money for a seizure alert service dog for Joey, an 11-year-old McVay Elementary School student who has autism and epilepsy. His seizures are not being controlled by his medication and come on at any time. Joey needs supervision 100% of his day due to his risk of seizing, falling during a seizure, choking or losing a clear airway during a seizure, and monitoring the seizure duration. Some days he has multiple seizures.
A service dog from 4 Paws for Ability could be a lifeline for Joey. Not only will the dog notify others when Joey is having a seizure, or even be able to detect an oncoming seizure, but the dog will be a comforting companion. $15,000 dollars is needed to place a quality trained dog, picked and trained specifically to meet Joey’s needs.
There will also be many other fun activities taking place at the stadium during the run/walk, including raffles, food truck vendors, a corn hole tournament, silent auction, live DJ, dunk the coach, face painting, a magician and carnival games. Cost to participate is $20 (plus a $3.20 sign-up fee), and the October 2 event goes from 3:00-6:00 p.m. Registration closes at 6:00 p.m. the day before, on Saturday, October 1.
