In a September 1 cityscene article entitled, “Shoring Up Interest,” written by Francis Pellicciaro, Westerville City Schools chemistry teachers Minnie Herrick (Central) and Beth Eddy (South) were interviewed about the value of the Lake Shore Cryotronics’ Student Day.

Lake Shore Cryotronics, located on East Walnut Street in Westerville, “produces devices that measure the thermal, electronic and magnetic properties of materials at very low temperatures including the magnetic materials essential for computers to work.  The company’s customers are mostly scientific researchers working in higher academia, national laboratories, and high technology industry,” according to the article.

One day each fall, they open their doors to high school juniors and sophomores from Westerville and the surrounding area.  Students are divided into groups and taken to stations where experts tell them about the product or service represented and the skills necessary to produce it.  Stations include sensor design and fabrication, probing, and material characterizations systems.

The teachers commented on the usefulness of this outstanding experience for their students, saying some who visited Lake Shore have gone on to intern at the company.  Lake Shore’s next Student Day will take place in October.
