The Westerville Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), in cooperation with the Westerville City Schools Gifted Education Department, has awarded four $300 scholarships to the Be WISE Camp at Denison University this summer.  Recipients are Layla Goebeler, grade 6, Blendon Middle School; Ashley Hockstock, grade 6, Genoa Middle School; Kayla Cochran, grade 6, Heritage Middle School; and Nya Rickman, grade 7, Walnut Springs Middle School.

Founded in 1881 and with nearly 1,000 branches across the country, AAUW (http://www.aauw.org) is a national organization promoting equity and education for women and girls.  AAUW President and retired math teacher Miriam Holmes and AAUW member/scholarship coordinator Cathy Stoessner met with the recipients on May 14, who attended an informational meeting and luncheon.

Be WISE is a mathematics, science and technology camp for girls entering grades 7 or 8 in the fall of 2015.  It features a separate curriculum for each grade level emphasizing hands-on activities in math and science.  This summer is the camp’s 26th anniversary.  More than 3,000 girls have participated.  This residential camp for young women will be held this year from June 14-19.  For further information, please visit http://www.bewisecamp.org
