Lions and tigers and sharks, oh my!  Fifth grade pupils at McVay Elementary recently participated in a Vocabulary Hat Parade.  Coordinated by science teacher Lindsey Clouston, they listed all of the vocabulary terms from the year.  Then they created hats to visualize those words.  For example, students built hats shaped like a tiger or a shark for the term “carnivore,” while others created hats overflowing with vines and flowers for “producer.”  The requirements were that each hat had to include the word, definition, illustration, and correct use in a sentence.  The children enjoyed showing their creativity by attaching comets and meteors to their hats using yarn.  The culminating activity was a whole fifth grade parade to showcase their talent and learning.  Other teachers were invited to award ribbons for creativity, scientific accuracy, and many other categories.
