Rotary Club of Westerville Names May Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, May 7.  May students are: Grant Hagglund, Westerville Central High School; My Trinh, Westerville North High School; and Desmond Fernandez, Westerville South High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members. 

Grant Hagglund, a senior at Westerville Central High School, is a class officer, member of the National Honor Society, member of Ski Club, and serves as a multi-handicap student helper and VIOG Soccer Coach.  He plans to study Biology in the Ohio State University Honors Program.

My Trinh, senior at Westerville North High School, has won the Rotary Youth Leadership Award, Kiwanis Academic Varsity Award, served as Committee Chair to organize the school Blood Drive, served on the newspaper staff, is a member of the Rotary Interact Club, participated in Mock Trial, serves as Student Council President and Class Vice-President. S he plans to major in International Business at Ohio State.

Desmond Fernandez is a sophomore at Westerville South High School. He plays on the football team, is active in theater, Key Club, Sophomore Class President, Young Americans, Service Day and the Superintendent’s Advisory Committee.  He has received the Ambassador Award, an Academic Letter, is a “Cats with Class” recipient, received the Westerville Fouse Award, and is an inductee in the International Thespian Society.  He plans on being President!  Prior to that, he hopes to major in law or business administration at The Ohio State University, Harvard or Brown University.
