Sixth grade students work on their team’s production line.

This past week, sixth grade students at Genoa Middle School participated in a mini-unit to learn more about the manufacturing industry.  Gary Walzer, from OH!Manufacturing, an affiliate of the Ohio Manufacturing Extension Partnership, helped students to gain a better understanding of the many items that are manufactured in Ohio; what is involved in the manufacturing process; and related career opportunities.  Pupils then participated in a simulation, setting up their own manufacturing line to produce sets of bean bags that might be sold to various retailers.  While conducting the simulation, youngsters gained valuable insights about the assembly line process and worker productivity.  The final day of the mini-unit allowed students to discuss the pros and cons of each “assembly line” and further explore career opportunities within the manufacturing industry.
