Students and staff at Hawthorne Elementary participated in Pajamas for Kids with Cancer Day, held on Friday, March 27. They raised $591.37 for the cause.

Every school day, 46 children are diagnosed with cancer.  As one can imagine, cancer treatment is not a quick or easy process, and these children spend from weeks to months at a time in the hospital as they undergo chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and other procedures.  They are often unable to attend school and participate in many childhood activities.  For a large portion of time during their treatment, these youngsters are usually in their pajamas.

In honor of all the children battling cancer, the Faith Pruden Foundation and Nationwide Children’s Hospital Pediatric Cancer Research hosted “Pajamas for Kids with Cancer Day” on Friday, March 27.  The event was a way to raise money in exchange for the ability to wear pajamas to school for the day.  While it was a fun activity for many, it was also a symbolic way to show support for the children who have no choice about wearing pajamas all the time.

Participating Westerville schools included Hawthorne, McVay and Mark Twain elementary schools, along with the Early Learning Center Preschool.

Faith Pruden was a first grader from Westerville who lost her battle with cancer in 2010.  The Faith Pruden memorial Scholarship is offered to Westerville seniors every year.  For further information, please visit www.faithprudenfoundation.org
