On Friday, October 17, the Westerville City Schools Chemical Hygiene Committee offered safety training to secondary science teachers and staff.  The event was coordinated by Westerville Central High School Assistant Principal Brad Adams, in conjunction with the Genoa Township Fire Department.  This hands-on opportunity provided instruction on the types and proper use of fire extinguishers.  Participants got to use a fire extinguisher to put out a small fire and practiced techniques regarding the use of fire blankets.  In addition, a discussion was held on how to correctly respond to gas leaks and chemical exposure, and the use of safety equipment in science classrooms.

Taking advantage of the training were 11 high school science teachers, two middle school science teachers, three high school mathematics teachers, three high school secretaries and one high school principal – Westerville Central’s Todd Spinner.  He said the day was not only very worthwhile and successful for everyone involved, but that “even the science teachers were surprised to learn a thing or two about chemical reactions that could occur during different types of fires involving fuel and other substances.”
