Rotary Club of Westerville Names October Students of the Month

The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, October 2.  October students are:  Kenna Pollard, Westerville Central High School; Carmen Stone, Westerville North High School; Sydney King, Westerville South High School; and Ali Baird, St. Francis DeSales High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members. 

Kenna Pollard, a senior at Westerville Central, holds a grade point average of 4.4.  Her favorite subjects of study are Biology, Anatomy, and Chemistry.  She participates in varsity soccer (captain in her junior year) and varsity track (captain in her senior year); is President of the National Honor Society and Renaissance; and works as an office assistant.  She also serves as a Sunday school teacher at Church of the Messiah and tutors at Alcott Elementary School.  After high school, she plans to attend college and study pre-med.

Westerville North High School senior Carmen Stone likes to study Language Arts, Chemistry and Biology.  She has earned a 4.24 grade point average.  Stone is Senior Class Secretary.  She is also a member of Student Council and a Junior Mentor.  She plays viola in the orchestra, participates in theatre, performs in a student professional string quartet, is chief copy editor for the yearbook and serves as news editor on student publications.  Stone is an American Legion Auxiliary Buckeye Girls’ State delegate; an American Red Cross blood drive volunteer; and sings in the church choir.  She has earned numerous awards.  Stone plans to attend college and major in Biology and pre-med.

Sydney King holds a 4.0 grade point average at Westerville South and is in the International Baccalaureate Diploma program.  The senior’s favorite subjects are Theory of Knowledge, History and Spanish.  She is involved in athletic training, Student Council, the National Honor Society and Junior Mentoring.  She is also active in Young Life and has taken mission trips to Tennessee, Missouri and South Dakota.  King is a scholar athlete and a Cat with Class.  She plans to attend The Ohio State University. 

Ali Baird, a senior at St. Francis DeSales High School, holds a 4.333 grade point average.  She is first in her class and enjoys studying Science and English.  This Student Ambassador is a member of the Math Club, the Engineering Club, the National Honor Society and Peer/Eucharistic Ministry.  She has volunteered as a softball coach for Westerville’s Special Olympics and at an Ohio State University medical research lab.  She also works at Donato’s.  Baird is an AP Scholar and is on the Honor Roll, in the National Honor Society, and participated in a highly selective MIT InvenTeam program.  She wants to pursue pre-medical studies.
