At a Regular Session held on September 24, the Westerville City Schools Board of Education and Superintendent John Kellogg recognized 24 students from Westerville Central, North and South high schools, who were selected by American Legion Post 171 to serve as delegates to Buckeye Boys and Girls State. Boys State was held this summer at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio and Girls State took place on the campus of the University of Mount Union in Alliance. Both programs involve the creation of mythical states, towns, counties and local governments where delegates become citizens who must participate in campaigns and elections and serve in various capacities. Participants are eligible to receive awards, honors and scholarships.
Also honored that evening were high school students who exceled on the Americanism and Government test, sponsored locally by the American Legion Young Budd Post 171 of Westerville. The test consisted of 50 questions covering Federal, State, County and Local government; the United States flag; the U.S. constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Each student was also required to compose an essay. Approximately 65,000 pupils throughout the State of Ohio in more than 500 schools took part in this testing program. Central’s Camron Hubble and South’s Adam Wartel achieved top scores in the district. Each received special recognition and a monetary award. Hubble was first runner-up in the State of Ohio.
