Two Westerville North sophomores, Owen Lewis and Grace Klima, were honored for their writing at a reception held on April 22. They won first and second place respectively in the Grades 9-12 category of the 12th annual Celebrate the Arts Writing Contest. Both take Honors English 2 at North, and are taught by Maryann Hines.
Lewis won first place for his essay, Stars, Stars, and More Stars: a Moment in Nature, and Klima won second place for her writing, Sleepless Nights. Both students were invited to read their work at the reception, which was held at the Westerville Public Library. They also received certificates and a copy of Celebrate the Arts 2018, a professionally bound compilation book, which includes their work. For his first place win, Lewis additionally received a $25 gift certificate. His work will appear in an upcoming issue of Westerville ThisWeek. Both students’ entries also may be viewed on the library’s web site.
The contest drew nearly 200 entries, which were judged by an Otterbein University writing professor and a retired Westerville City Schools teacher. The annual event is sponsored by the Westerville Arts Council, the Westerville Public Library, ThisWeek Westerville News and Public Opinion and the Friends of the Westerville Library.
