Two students from Westerville North High School were honored for their writing skills on April 24 by the Arts Council of Westerville as part of a contest called Celebrate the Arts

Sophomore Christina Prokop won honorable mention for a piece she wrote about Frederick Douglass.  Students read The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass for class and reflect on what they learn through this first person account of the horrors of slavery.  Prokop is a pupil in Maryann Hines’s Honors English 2 class.

Sophomore Nick Martz won first place for an essay he wrote on living simply.  This was for a simplicity project students complete during their study of Henry David Thoreau.  Pupils go two days without technology.  His piece was a reflection on that experience.  Martz is a student in Maryann Hines’s Honors English 2 class.  He read his work at the public reception honoring winners.

Both pieces have been published in a book that is available for purchase at the Westerville Library.
