Faculty and staff at Columbus State Community College (CSCC) recently facilitated two opportunities for Westerville students to explore careers in health-related professionals. Juniors in Human Body Systems and Medical Interventions (both courses in the Project Lead the Way Health Pathway) attended a Health Sciences Career Fair on April 22. Students toured the campus and nursing labs, and spoke with representatives at more than 20 booths representing a range of departments in CSCC’s Health and Medical program. Students in Introduction to Clinical Lab Theory, a College Credit Plus course dually facilitated by CSCC instructors and Westerville City Schools science teachers, have been learning about the types of medical tests and analyses conducted in clinical labs. On April 26 they had the opportunity to see a lab in action when they toured Mt. Caramel St. Ann’s clinical lab facility. Pupils attending both events appreciated the opportunity to learn about the pathways they might take to achieve specific career goals and the skills needed to have a successful career in a medical lab, as well as to see the advanced technology now used in all aspects of medical fields.
