The Westerville South High School varsity basketball team was honored April 11 by the Westerville City Schools Board of Education for becoming State Champions by defeating Lima Senior in a thrilling 57 - 55 victory at Value City Arena on March 19.  The Board and Superintendent commended Coach Ed Calo, his staff, and the team for “a remarkable and historical season of play that will never be forgotten.”  Dr. Nancy Nestor-Baker read a resolution of commendation from Congressman Pat Tiberi, followed by a surprise Resolution of Endorsement that Calo’s legacy of excellence will be commemorated when he retires from coaching basketball by the official naming at Westerville South of the Ed Calo Basketball Court.  In the past 29 seasons, under the direction of Coach Calo, Westerville South High School basketball has emerged as one of the best programs in Central Ohio, producing All-State players, players who went on to compete and succeed at the collegiate level, and numerous league, district and regional titles.  Coach Calo has guided the Wildcats to a 437-226 record while winning 11 league championships, five district championships, and their 2nd Regional Championship this past season.  He has been named League Coach of the Year 10 times, AP District Coach of the Year four times, AP State Coach of the year in 1996 and 2010 as well as 2015 All-Metro Coach of the Year, and USA Today Ohio Coach of the Year.
