Three Westerville City School (WCS) District employees – Charlie Runyan, Anne Baldwin, and Cynthia DeVese – recently presented at the Ohio ACT State Organization Conference.  The Creating Opportunities for Changing Times conference seeks to inform, educate and inspire those who spend time and energy working with individuals to prepare them for college and career success.  The ACT State Organization seeks to host annual professional development for the benefit of Ohio's education and workforce community.

Minority Student Achievement Coordinator Cynthia Devese’s session, Inspiring Students to Become Minority Scholars, shared how WCS has implemented an initiative, a Minority Scholars Program (MSP), aimed at reducing the achievement gap by expanding the number of African American and Latino students in honors and Advanced Placement courses at each of our three high schools.  MSP empowers and inspires high school students to work to positively impact the number of students of color who are college bound.

In the session College Credit Plus (CCP): Communicating the Opportunities with Families, Career Tech and College Readiness Coordinator Anne Baldwin was part of a panel discussion that exchanged ideas about how WCS has communicated CCP opportunities to families, which is extremely important to the ultimate success of students.  The panel focused on different approaches and best practices to reach and support students and families.

Westerville South High School counselor Charlie Runyan led a panel discussion on career paths for counselors, Onward and Upward: Career Paths for Professional Progression in College Counseling.  The interactive session included members of the admissions departments in universities around Ohio who shared their career trajectories and how to access higher education opportunities.
