How does one become a registered nurse? This question was answered at Westerville North High School on October 19 when Columbus State Community College nursing faculty members Kathy McManamon RN, MSN, and Tammy Montgomery RN, MS, dropped by to explain different paths that can be taken. They also spoke about the nursing board exam and skills necessary to pursue that occupation.
Their visit was part of the Westerville City School District’s initiative to encourage students to explore career pathways and engage in college coursework through College Credit Plus, where high school and college credit is earned simultaneously. The introductory, dual credit Medical Terminology course is a part of the district’s Health Pathway and provides an overview of medical language. Emphasis is placed on terms that are practical and commonly found in the day-to-day work of all allied health professions. This concise course gives basic principles for understanding the language with an overview of terms from many areas of medicine. For students who want to further pursue the Health Pathway, Medical Terminology provides an opportunity to become versed in the language health professionals use in their careers.
