Westerville Central High School’s newest Alumni Hall of Fame inductee Ben Buchanan.
Westerville Central High School inducted two alumni into its Hall of Fame at a luncheon and ceremony held on April 12 – Dr. Benjamin Buchanan and Kathryn Golden. The school’s Superintendent’s Student Advisory Committee selected those honored from a pool of applicants who graduated at least 10 years ago, have demonstrated success in their career, and have made significant contributions to their community. Dr. Benjamin Buchanan was an athletic and academic leader when he attended Westerville Central. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Superintendent’s Advisory Committee, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He garnered a multitude of athletic honors during his time in high school and was named the 2008 Outstanding Senior Graduate. After graduating, he attended The Ohio State University, where he received a Bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communications in 2011; a Master’s in Sports Management in 2012; and a Doctorate in Sports Management in 2018. He also played football for OSU under head coaches Jim Tressel, Luke Fickell and Urban Meyer. Dr. Buchanan works for Sinclair Communications and the Big Ten Network as a sports broadcaster. Locally, he also hosts Football Fever, where he covers many aspects of Buckeye football games and interviews players and coaches. In his free time, Dr. Buchanan has volunteered for Habitat for Humanity, the Columbus Bryden House, and the Second and Seven Foundation. He has also completed three medical missionary trips to Central America. He serves as an elder at the Central College Presbyterian Church, mentors students around Central Ohio, and delivers keynote speeches.
Kathryn Lynn Golden, a 2007 Westerville Central graduate, was a seminal figure in the arts program when she was a Warhawk. She participated in extracurricular activities including jazz chorus, color guard, and Westerville Winter Guard, where she earned accolades at regional and world levels. Her passion for the arts started when she signed up for the only film class offered at Central, taught by Debra Cornelius. While in high school, she created a documentary on the genocide in Darfur. This was submitted to the C-Span student film competition, earning third place in 2007. Golden received a B.A. in Media Arts from Brigham Young University in 2011; a Certificate in Screenwriting at UCLA in 2013; and a Master of Arts degree from the London Film School in 2016. She now works as a screenwriter and film script reader at the Writer’s Guild Foundation in Los Angeles. In 2017, she was one of five finalists in the Austin Film Festival for a comedy script she wrote titled A Walk on the Moon. She also wrote the script and created a comedy miniseries called Superlosers, which can be found on YouTube. Golden was unable to attend the Alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Her father, Dr. Glen Golden, accepted the honor on her behalf.
