American Legion Young-Budd Post 171 has tabulated results from the local 2018 Americanism and Government Test, and Test Coordinator Dr. William G. Golden says, “We should have some very competitive scores to submit to further competitions. The winners are:
- Top scoring senior boy – Peter Cochrane, Westerville South High School
- Top scoring senior girl – Molly Gulley, Westerville South
- Top scoring junior boy – Joseph Clegg, Westerville Central
- Top scoring junior girl – Jessica Baker, Westerville Central
- Top scoring sophomore boy – Reuben Simiyu, Westerville North
- Top scoring sophomore girl – Muna Ali, Westerville North
Top students in the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior categories will receive a check for $100 from Westerville Young-Budd Post 171 of the American Legion and their names and test papers will be sent to District 12 headquarters. If they win at that level, they will be entered in the state competition.
The students with the top three scores from each high school are:
- Westerville Central – Joseph Clegg (first), Ted Lau (second), and Jessica Baker (third)
- Westerville North – Ethan Moore (first), Danielle Pratt (second), and Cassandra Mohr (third)
- Westerville South – Molly Gulley (first), Rachel Slaybaugh (second), and Peter Cochrane (third)
Top Scorers in their schools will receive checks in the following amounts: First place, $100; second place, $75.00; and third place, $50.
Each winner will be given an American Legion lapel pin during a future meeting of the Westerville Young-Budd Post 171 of the American Legion.
Legionnaires of Ohio created the Americanism and Government Test program of the Ohio American Legion, in 1936. It is open to students in grades 10, 11, and 12, and consists of six true/false questions, 44 multiple-choice questions, and a 300-word essay. On average, more than 65,000 students participate in the Test program annually.
