The Rotary Club of Westerville, which sponsors a Student of the Month program, recognized recipients at a luncheon at Villa Milano held on Thursday, February 1.  February students are Michael Doud, Westerville Central High School; MacKenzie Jefferies, Westerville North High School; Josh Coffey, Westerville South High School, and William Cotter, St. Francis DeSales High School.

The purpose of the program is twofold:  to recognize outstanding students who have distinguished themselves by serving their school and to expose them to the Rotary Club and its ideal of “Service Above Self.”  Students selected join Rotarians for lunch every week for a month, and have the opportunity to interact with members.

Westerville Central senior Michael Doud holds a 3.85 grade point average (GPA).  History and Science are his favorite subjects of study.  He has played men’s lacrosse for three years and earned a two-year varsity letter.  Doud, an Eagle Scout from Boy Scout Troop 192, has volunteered for W.A.R.M., Buddy Ball and the Lion’s Club.  He received an academic letter and is a three-year scholar-athlete.  He also works as a patient transporter at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, where he says it is “very rewarding to make a difference for kids in our community.”  Doud plans to go into the medical field.

Humanities and AP Government are MacKenzie Jefferies’ favorite subjects.  This Westerville North senior earned a 4.3 GPA and is involved in varsity cheer, W.A.L.T., the National Honor Society, and the American Sign Language Council.  She is active in her church and she tutors two eighth grade students.  Jefferies is a scholar athlete who has received recognition in academics and athletics.  She also won Rotary’s Youth Leadership Award in 2016.  Jefferies plans to major in Political Science at Utah State.

Westerville South senior Josh Coffey plays volleyball, and is a member of the Marching Band and the National Honor Society.  He is involved in theatre, the Knights of Columbus, and Vanguard Club volleyball.  Math and Physics are his favorite classes, and he has earned a 4.75 GPA.  Coffee is an Eagle Scout and a National Merit Commended Scholar.  He plans to major in Electrical Engineering at the University of Notre Dame or The Ohio State University.

William Cotter is a senior at St. Francis DeSales, where he holds a 4.0 GPA.  Math, Physics and Chemistry are his favorite subjects of study.  He participates in the Student Ambassador Club, baseball, the National Honor Society, and the Spanish National Honor Society.  He tutors and is a Kairos retreat leader.  Cotter has volunteered for W.A.R.M., the Summer Lunch Program, and WYBSL.  He helps his neighbors in Wyndham Park shovel driveways during snow and ice storms.  He received the Geri Hatch Award and has been on the Honor Roll seven semesters.  Cotter will attend Miami University to major in Bioengineering and Premedical Studies.
