Spring might be a little more vibrant next year, thanks to the 5,000 daffodil bulbs that were planted by volunteers on October 20 in celebration of the 5,000 Westerville City Schools students who have been touched by Challenge Day programs during the past 10 years.

Westerville Education Challenge (WEC) organized the planting effort, which took place at Westerville Central, North and South high schools.  Challenge Day began in 2007 and has become a tradition in Westerville high schools.  The program occurs during the school day with 100 plus students at each building participating in a series of meaningful activities designed to address issues such as bullying, stereotypes and violence.  As the day progresses, participants get to know themselves and others, developing greater understanding, acceptance and new friendships.  By the end of the day, pupils feel empowered to speak out and make a positive difference in their lives at home, at school and in the community.  WEC has donated more than $70,000 to Westerville City Schools to support Challenge Day, along with grants for educators, and a new partnership with middle schools.  Challenge Day in Westerville City Schools this year will take place on November 13 at North; November 14 at South; and November 15 and 16 at Central.
