On Friday, September 8, the Westerville Central Warhawks varsity football team defeated Eastmoor Academy. Also winning that evening was the Mason Woods Charitable Foundation. “Tackling Childhood Cancer” was the theme, and proceeds raised from a 50/50 raffle and a yellow bandana sale will benefit the organization, which has raised money for families facing cancer at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus. Central’s student section sported the yellow bandanas in the stands, for yellow/gold is the Childhood Cancer Awareness color. A pre-game party was held in honor of Andrea Woods (Mason’s mother), who flew in from Mississippi to be at the game. The team also presented her with a jersey signed by his friends and teammates.
Mason Woods was a third grade student at Fouse Elementary School when he passed away on February 3, 2009, after a six-year battle with leukemia. He would have been a senior at Central this year. Organizers Jenny and Eric Nickel, along with Jami Cellars and a host of other friends and supporters, succeeded in their mission to “carry Mason’s memory with us all the way to graduation.”
