On March 21, 2017, two years after starting a school project as 7th graders, Anna Borders and Sarah Gellner (former Genoa Middle School students and current Westerville Central High School 9th graders),  represented their five-member team by travelling to the Ohio Statehouse to watch the Ohio House of Representatives vote on House Bill 12.  This is a bill they created, which proposes making the barn the official historical architectural structure for the State of Ohio.  This journey, which began as part of a Social Studies project led by Social Studies teacher Caley Nestor-Baker and gifted facilitator Debbie Pellington, has been an ongoing lesson of perseverance and hard work.  While the girls are no longer at Genoa Middle School, Nestor-Baker and Pellington are happy to have the opportunity to continue working with the group on House Bill 12, sponsored by Representative Anne Gonzales (District 19).  The bill passed in the Ohio House of Representatives by a vote of 94 in favor and 0 opposed, moving it onto the Senate.  To garner support over the past two years, the girls have been using mail, email and calling campaigns, as well as a grassroots social media campaign including a website, Twitter and Facebook.  Learn more and support their effort by visiting www.ohiobarnbill.weebly.com or their twitter feed at twitter.com/ohiobarnbill.
