Westerville students Aidan Das (Central) and Camden Harrison (South), accompanied by Westerville South High School social studies teacher Lisa Baughman, traveled to Iceland from March 18-28 to attend the Global Student Leaders Summit.  For three days, pupils participated in the summit, which was devoted to the Future of Energy.  They listened to keynote speakers including William Kamkwamba, former U.S. Energy Secretary; Dr. Steven Chu; Jessica Matthews; and the president of Iceland himself, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson.  They also got to tour northern Iceland, visiting such wonders as the Blue Lagoon, the lava formations at Dimmuborgir, and a geothermal power plant.  Seeing the Northern Lights was a highlight of the trip.

The next Global Student Leaders Summit will take place in Peru in March of 2017 on the topic of Global Citizenship.  Other upcoming travel opportunities for Westerville students include trips to Japan, Paris and Barcelona, Scotland and Ireland.  A meeting about all 2017 tours, including the Peru Summit, will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4, in the Westerville Central media center, located at 7118 Mt. Royal Avenue.  For further information, please contact Lisa Baughman at baughmaL@wcsoh.org.
