Westerville Student Musicians Meet with Success at OMEA Solo & Ensemble Contest

A number of Westerville students traveled last month to Reynoldsburg High School to perform in the 2016 OMEA District 15 Solo & Ensemble event.  At the event, each student performs either a solo (with or without accompaniment) or with an ensemble before an OMEA judge for a final rating.   Results that follow were provided by each high school. 

Westerville South High School (WSHS) Band

Of more than 30 band students who participated, 16 Superior (I) ratings were earned:

  • Class A Flute Solo: Kaleigh Rudge, Suite in a minor
  • C Flute Solo: Jennifer Lann Andantino (from Divertimento #14 in Bb)
  • Class A Clarinet Solo: Eleanor Saunders, Concertino, Op. 26
  • Class B Bassoon Solo: Natalie Reichart, Romanze
  • Class B Alto Saxophone Solo: Eleanor Saunders, Rigaudon
  • Class A Trumpet Solo: Noah Hollyfield, Concerto in Eb major
  • Class C Trumpet Solo: Jenny Courts, The Dancer
  • Class A Tuba Solo Jenna Johnston, Romance and Scherzo
  • Class A Trombone Solo: Sam Johnston, Sonata No. 1
  • Class C Trombone Solo: Abigail Ingersoll, Topaz
  • Class A Tuba Solo: Jenna Johnston, Romance and Scherzo
  • Class B Marimba Solo: Jack Gagnon, Rain Dance
  • Class A Marimba Solo: Daemon Gordon, Mystic Fire
  • Class B Clarinet Trio: Lana Paquette, Brian Courts, and Hailey Brown, Falling Leaves
  • Class B Saxophone Quartet: Evelyn Seitz, Edward Jewell, Mackenzie Arens, and Katelyn Grella, Minuetto
  • Class A Low Brass Quartet: Sam Johnston, Elise Wesley, Jenna Johnston, and Andrew Doolittle, Power

Receiving Excellent Ratings were:

  • Class B Flute Solo: Katelyn Gluck, Madrigal
  • Class C Flute Solo: Alivia Olsen, Evening in the Country
  • Class B Clarinet Solo: Jordan Friese, Aria
  • Class C Bass Clarinet Solo: Chloe Leonard, Bourree and Minuet
  • Class B Baritone Saxophone Solo: Edward Jewell, Andante and Allegro
  • Class A Trumpet Solo: Jacob Austrino, Sonate
  • Class C Trombone Solo: Jack Mclean, Opal
  • Class B Snare Drum Solo: Brian Schindehette, Colonial Drummer
  • Class B Marimba Solo: Alex Howlett,  Kain
  • Class A Woodwind Quintet: Lauren Seitz, James Hagerman, Gretchen Michaels, Emily Pawlack, and Natalie Reichart, Pastoral

South’s Director of Bands is John Laswell.

Westerville South High School Orchestra

For the second time in 15 years, all participants earned a medal in this event.  Other notable schools participating in this event were Upper Arlington, Hilliard, Worthington, and Dublin schools.  Solo (I Superior) rankings were earned by:

  • Grace Denbow, violin
  • Charlotte Chicotel, violin
  • Kyra Welch, viola
  • Nathaniel Kinser, violin
  • Miriam Akomeah, violin
  • Marissa Jackson, violin
  • Joseph Saperstein, cello
  • Noah Stevens, cello
  • Dakota Hayes, bass
  • Lydia Young, bass.

Solo (II Excellent) was achieved by:

  • Colleen Slaybaugh, violin

  • Francie Gordish, violin

  • Alex Prudnikov, viola

  • Matthew Reese, cello

  •  Aiden Thompson, bass

Ensemble (I Superior) ratings were received by:

  • The WSHS Cello Trio (Joe Saperstein, Patrick Park & Noah Stevens) 
  • The WSHS String Quartet (Khanh Vu and Miriam Akomeah, violin, Alex Prudnikov, viola, Rachel Slaybaugh, cello
  • The WSHS String Quintet (Leah Hall and Silas Burson, violin, Katie Ball, viola, cello

Ensemble (II Excellent) recipients were:

  • The WSHS String Trio (Sierra Ward, violin, Isis (Izzie) Deberry, viola, and Kaiya Dildine, cello.

South’s Orchestra Director is Mark Stevens.

Westerville Central High School Band

A number of band and orchestra students from Central were out of town during this event, but those who stayed and participated were:

  • Helena Savolain: marimba solo
  • Cassie Reinoehl, Max Davis and Izzy Phillips: saxophone trio
  • Mitchell Louden: euphonium solo
  • Ian Beach: tuba solo
  • Marielle Beach: flute solo
  • Jacob Miller, Ranya Bousfiha, and Lillian Craig: saxophone trio
  • Ben Middleton: saxophone trio (received Superior Rating)

Central’s Band Director is Doug Hildreth.

Westerville Central High School Orchestra

  • Eli Melko: violin solo (received Superior rating)
  • Amber Hockstok - Violin Solo - Excellent Rating

The Orchestra Director at Westerville Central is John Vermeulen. 

Westerville North High School Band and Orchestra

A number of band and orchestra students from North were in Florida during this event, but those who stayed and participated were:

  • Katie Kacsandi - oboe solo (Excellent)
  • Preston McCallum - trumpet solo (Excellent)
  • Corrynne Osborne - trombone solo (Excellent)
  • Morgan Page - Violin Solo (Excellent)
  • Alana Reese - Double Bass Solo (Superior)
  • Olivia Stauch - Bassoon Solo

Jordi Vilanova directs both the band and orchestra at Westerville North High School.
