On September 20, students at Walnut Springs Middle School met up with classmate Marhkis McDermott, who has been battling a cancerous brain tumor since January. A fundraiser, organized by School Counselor Sherri Pastiva and Principal Becca Yanni, was held to raise money for the popular eighth grade student. The PTSA purchased bracelets to sell; Otis Spunkmeyer donated a dunk tank; and Yanni brought in some candy to sell for candy grams. When the day was finished, $1,274.70 had been collected.
McDermott has been involved in the Otterbein Boys Group at Walnut Springs, and really enjoys music and dancing. “The best characteristic of Marhkis is his extremely positive personality,” said Pastiva. “He has a lot of friends here… All of us can learn from the gratitude and uplifting spirit he brings to any conversation.”
