Students at Walnut Springs Middle School who speak Spanish and French now have more than 100 books to read thanks to a Dollar General Literacy Foundation Youth Literacy Grant for $2,000. The Foundation’s grant program was extremely competitive with more than 2,500 grant applications received. Librarian Jean Trimble was inspired to apply for the grant when she noticed several of the school’s Spanish-speaking students were not checking out books from the library. When making her purchasing decision, Trimble considered popular books written in English and received guidance from the ESL staff.
