Three Westerville middle school projects received honors at the State History Day Competition on April 30 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio. Research and projects were created following the theme “Exploration, Exchange, Encounter.” Moving on to the national competition are:
- Ema Rennie, Genoa Middle School, Junior Paper, Nellie Bly. Deanna McDaniel, teacher.
- Kyra Lesmerises, Genoa Middle School, Junior Individual Website, Viola Liuzzo. Lisa Lunn, Deanna McDaniel, teachers.
- Antonia Mapes, Walnut Springs Middle School, Junior Paper, Frederic Putnam: Excavating the Serpent Mound. Tammy Salzmann, Pat Schirtzinger, teachers.The staff at the Ohio History Connection also chose Mapes’ exhibit to represent the Ohio delegation at the National Museum of American History.This is a special honor awarded to one entry from each delegation.Shoshanna Gross, State Coordinator of Ohio History Day, said they chose it because it was carefully researched and beautifully executed.“And we love that it’s a unique, Ohio-based topic,” she added.
One group from Genoa also received the Alternate designation. They will go to nationals if either of the Junior Group Documentary winners are not able to attend the national competition. They are: Emma Snyder, Dilara Sen, and Laura Wolfe, Junior Group Documentary, Nikola Tesla: Life and Legacy. Caley Nestor Baker, Deanna McDaniel, teachers.
The National History Day Contest takes place at the University of Maryland in College Park from June 12-16.
