The Bette Marschall Memorial Education Fund of The Columbus Foundation has announced the recipients of nine grant awards totaling $3,221 to Westerville City Schools personnel for applications submitted this spring. Recipients are:
- Jacqueline Hickey, ESL teacher at Mark Twain Elementary School, grades K-5, $480 to pay for three interpreters (Somali, Spanish, Nepali) at two ESL parent meetings.
- Benjamin Hartnell, classroom teacher at Westerville North High School, $300 to help purchase uniforms and accessories that will help him continue to provide an “amazing classroom environment.”
- Kim Holter, Intervention Specialist at Pointview Elementary, K-2, $440 to purchase KEEP BOOKS that will be mailed to students over the summer months to maintain and improve reading skills.
- Benjamin Hartnell, classroom teacher at Westerville North High School, grades 9-10, $250 to subsidize costs of working toward his MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages.
- Lori Peters, classroom teacher at Westerville North and Westerville South high schools, grades 9-12, $437 to purchase special goggles to simulate various types and levels of visual impairment.
- Amy Erath, ESL teacher at Heritage and Genoa middle schools, grades 6-8, $355 to purchase 10 electronic handheld dictionaries to assist with academic vocabulary.
- Lisa Fields, ESL teacher at Hawthorne Elementary, grades 4-5 ESL, $96 to purchase “Flocabulary,” which uses songs to teach vocabulary and concepts.
- Katherine Earl, classroom teacher at Westerville North High School, grades 9-12, $273 to purchase an interactive game and book that teach social skills, as well as sensory therapy items for autistic students.
- Cynthia DeVese, Coordinator Minority Student Achievement, Heritage Middle School, Grades 7 and 8, $290 to subsidize the cost of introducing a male-mentoring program to address ongoing negative-male-behavior problems.
- Patricia Holcomb Farrenkopf, Gifted Facilitator, Blendon Middle School, grade 6, $300 to subsidize the purchase of a classroom set of Word within a Word, designed for gifted middle school students.
