Three Westerville middle school students have been selected to join the Capital University Junior Winds, a youth ensemble hosted by Capital University that provides high-level instruction and repertoire for band students in grades 8 and 9.
Genoa Middle School’s Lyla Bjerke and Blendon Middle School’s Emerson Koh play the flute while Heritage Middle School’s David Weaver plays the tuba for the ensemble.
They will rehearse with the Capital University Junior Winds each week and perform four separate concerts throughout the school year. Students will also have the opportunity to travel with the group to Chicago next summer.
Junior Winds is one of three performance programs hosted by Capital University; Capital Cadet Band (CCB) provides instruction and enrichment for students in grades 6-8 who have been playing their woodwind, brass or percussion instruments for at least one year. Columbus Youth Symphonic Band (CYSB) provides an advanced performance experience for the high school wind and percussion musicians in grades 10-12.
Members are selected through annual auditions, held each spring. More than 35 local schools are represented in the membership.
